Planning out a home remodel can be a trying process, especially if you’re trying to work with an amateur home remodeling contractor. At Maryland’s Best Remodeling, we’ve helped hundreds of homeowners in Maryland and have learned a few things that can help make the remodeling process run smoother.
1. Are You Licensed?
The first question you ask any contractor should be for them to present their licenses. You may be able to save some money by hiring an unlicensed contractor, but in the long run, that decision could end up costing you more. When you work with a licensed contractor, you can rest easy knowing they’ve proven their abilities before and are covered by insurance.
2. What is the Timeline for Completion?
We can’t tell you how many times we’ve heard of remodeling projects falling apart because the contractor pushed on past the deadline. When you initially meet with your contractor, you should both agree on a timetable that outlines different time-related project goals, as well as the proposed project end-date.
3. How Will The Cleanup Process Go?
Performing a home remodel can be quite a dirty process, so after all the work has been done, there’s going to need to be a cleanup process. This is something you’ll want to discuss with your home remodeler, as many contractors offer cleanup as part of the project.
4. What Will the Payment Schedule Be?
Before any work can begin, you and your contractor will need to establish how payments will be made. Some contractors may want some money up front, some may want to be paid throughout, and some may just want everything at the end.
5. Will Any Permits Be Required and Will You Get Them?
Depending on the size of your project and what you’re doing, you may need to receive some permits to complete your project. The process of applying for permits can be tedious, but it is something that all Maryland contractors should have experience with.
